Donate A Box Highlight: Common Threads

It’s giving season… right? Well, Farmhouse Delivery friends and family – you have been generously giving since April, through our Donate A Box program. During the past several months, all of which have been uncertain, unplanned and at times felt very hopeless, y’all brought hope to the community.

If you are new to Farmhouse Delivery, the Donate A Box program is a box you can add to your cart at any time that support at-risk and food insecure individuals, youth, and families, that are founded and run by BIPOC, food and beverage industry employees negatively impacted by the COVID-19 global pandemic, and BIPOC farmers.

This month, all Donate A Box contributions will go to Common Threads. Founded in 2003, Common Threads is a national nonprofit that provides children and families cooking and nutrition education to encourage healthy habits that contribute to wellness. They equip under-resourced communities with information to make affordable, nutritious, and appealing food choices wherever they live, work, learn, and play. In addition, they believe food is rooted in culture and tradition so they promote diversity in their lessons and recipes, encouraging participants to celebrate their culture.

Common Threads has 12 locations across the country, 5 of which are right here in Texas, including Austin, Dallas/Ft. Worth, El Paso, Houston, and San Antonio! They offer programs for children and adults in historically disinvested communities with interactive, culturally-responsive cooking and nutrition education onsite at schools and partner organizations. Their programs have been proven to positively influence students’ nutrition knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors.

“Our world is a large quilt and its people are the fabric – colorful swatches of beautifully woven material – all joined together by these common threads — family and food.”
– Chef Art Smith, Co-Founder, Common Threads

Like many of us during this pandemic, Common Threads has gone virtual. They foster the virtual learning space with their digital nutrition education platform, Common Bytes. Wherever possible, they provide groceries for participants in virtual programs and make it a priority to source locally from minority and women-owned businesses. The Common Bytes platform allows them the opportunity to reach people everywhere.

That may be the most positive outcome of this time we are in… finding more ways to reach people everywhere. Our community truly expands at that point and what better way to expand then with the common thread of food and nutrition fueling the connection. We are proud to partner with Common Threads for the November Donate A Box partnership and hope you are too!

Did you know you can add the Donate A Box to your cart once or as a reoccurring donation?
